Three Days in February soundtrack | Doc Edge Film Festival

Three Days in February has been selected for the international film festival, Doc Edge!

I had the pleasure of collaborating with NZ filmmaker Serena Stevenson earlier this year to compose a work for string quartet for the soundtrack of her film, Three Days in February (3DIF). The film is centred around Splore – a three day music and art festival which dates back to 1998 and uses footage that Serena gathered over seven years attending Splore Festival.

3DIF has been selected as a finalist for the New Zealand Feature Film award at the Doc Edge Awards – the winner of this category will be eligible for Oscar consideration in 2026. How cool is that!

Working with Paddy Free of Pitch Black at 3DIF rehearsals

Most of the soundtrack was created by the iconic NZ duo Pitch Black alongside several collaborators. My work for string quartet and a choir piece by Takerei Komene are the exceptions to this. I worked closely with Serena while composing the piece and we were both stoked with the result. The film had its premiere screening, with the soundtrack performed live, at The Civic in Auckland on 14 February. My contribution to the soundtrack was performed beautifully by Auckland-based Arcus Quartet and I really enjoyed working with them, as well as the live sound engineer, to bring the piece to life in that particular space.

Rehearsals at The Civic for Three Days in February

3DIF has been selected for the category “The Art of Storytelling” at Doc Edge and will have four screenings in cinemas across New Zealand – starting in Auckland on 25th June (the opening night of the festival) and 28th June. It will then screen in Wellington on 19 July and Christchurch on 21 July.

The live recording of the string quartet from the premiere screening back in February is now part of the film’s soundtrack so the lovely sounds of Arcus Quartet will be heard throughout the country! This was such a special project to be part of – a labour of love for Serena which she worked on for many years and a hugely collaborative project which brought together many creatives working in different spaces.

Tickets are available here to attend the Doc Edge screenings of Three Days in February in Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch.
